Lift trucks or forklifts are powered industrial trucks that are usually utilized in the transportation and lifting of materials for different applications. These equipment are usually used in the construction, mining, dockside and warehousing operations.

The forklift can be referred to a lot of different names, depending on their uses. Several different examples of these names include: lift trucks, stacker trucks, fork trucks and trailer loaders. These types of machinery are utilized all around the world, mainly within the warehousing and manufacturing business.

In the mid 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the very first forklifts made their debut in the building of the Pennsylvania railroad during 1906. At that time, platform trucks were launched to help in moving goods. These very first platform trucks run on batteries. The trucks regained their popularity during the First World War when extreme shortage of labor occurred because of all the enlisted men. This is when forklifts truly arrived on the market to stay.

For forklifts, there are basically 2 types: ones which handle light cargo and the ones that deal with heavier cargo. Lighter models would comprise: side loaders, towing tractors, walkie starters and hand pallet trucks. These kinds of machines are made for handling lighter cargo and they are not ideal for extremely heavy loads. The specific load capacity of the machine is posted on the machinery itself and in the owner's handbook. Several examples of the big truck types comprise: truck mounted forklifts, telescopic handlers and walkie order picking trucks.

On the market today, there are numerous kinds of forklifts available. Each can provide different load capacities. Most of the time within warehouse operations, the lighter models is utilized. Bigger models are often seen in the shipping business. Some models have a tilting mast to make the load capable of bending so as to counteract any slipping.

The majority of units have rear steering wheels. This design aspect is to increase the ease in how the machine is capable of being maneuvered. Additionally, this steering manner comes in very handy when operating around corners. These types of equipment could be unstable due to their changing centers of gravity. It is a good idea to avoid negotiating sharp corners.

Specialized forklifts are yet another kind. These machines include articulated counterbalance trucks and explosion proof trucks. The explosion proof trucks are used within factories and settings that deal with flammable materials.
