Driving a forklift is a lot more complicated compared to driving a vehicle. A forklift operator must be highly trained and skilled in the operation of a forklift. Operating a forklift requires a high level of attentiveness. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration reports that 85 people die in forklift-related mishaps per year. Around 35,000 people are hurt every year in lift truck mishaps. Nearly half of operator deaths are caused by a lift truck tip over.
To prevent tip overs, it is important that operators know how to correctly estimate the weight of a load. In the construction industry, the weight of a load is normally posted right on the load. If the load consists of cubes containing 90 concrete blocks and a concrete block weighs 16 kilograms, the whole weight of the load would be approximately 1,360 kilograms. If a load is wet, the driver must take additional weight into consideration.
It is dangerous for drivers to make poorly informed guesses about the real load weight and whether the lift truck can handle it. If an operator cannot be sure about the load weight, he should request assistance from the supervisor.
Failure to pull up near enough to a building or lift a load utilizing an extended boom can be another cause of tip overs. To avoid tipping lift truck, it is essential to use the load chart. Even when a forklift does not actually tip over, a mishap has occurred whenever the back wheels come off the ground. This means the limitations of the forklift have been exceeded. Though damage may not be obvious, the back axle can have sustained broken upon hitting the ground.
It is even possible for forklifts to tip even when not carrying a load. Unloaded forklifts could tip just after a driver has placed a load on scaffolding using an extended boom. If the operator reverses the forklift and turns suddenly while bringing the boom down, the center of gravity would be pushed to the edges of the forklift and could result in a tip over. A driver must always use the joysticks to be able to retract and lower the fork.
