Forklift Battery Safety
The big industrial sized batteries utilized to power electric forklifts must be charged frequently and properly maintained. Safety procedures must be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is very essential to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
It is important for employees working with a forklift battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG consist of safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect both skin and clothing from leaked acid or other residue is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash post should be located near the charging place. The path to the station should not be blocked and an injured employee should be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging area within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery should be at the same amperage. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
While near a battery and charging area, open flames are not allowed. Never allow things like matches or lighters to be utilized when someone is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also has to be properly ventilated. The recharging process can cause fumes to be released. These fumes are both explosive and poisonous.
