New York is a state in the northeastern United States. New York State must not be confused with New York City. Although Albany is the capital city of New York State, the most heavily populated city is New York City. The Algonquian, Lenape and Iroquois Native American nations inhabited the region now called the state of New York when Dutch settlers arrived in the early 17th century. Henry Hudson claimed the region for the Dutch during the year 1609 and a fort was constructed near the site of present-day Albany. The Dutch formed the colony of New Netherland, that was taken over by the British during the year 1664.
The state is bordered by the states of New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south, and Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont towards the east. New York State has a maritime border with the state of Rhode Island east of Long Island. New York State shares an international border with Canada towards the north and west, that makes Canada a vital economic partner with regards to tourism and exports. Canada receives the biggest share of total global exports. Canadians spend almost $500 million each year while visiting the state of New York.
New York City attract millions of visitors from all around North America and the rest of the globe. The city is a major center for finance, culture, manufacturing and transportation. The city is home of the New York Stock Exchange, the biggest stock exchange within the world by dollar volume. Various major companies have their head office situated here. The city played an essential role in the development of the country as the gateway for immigration to the U.S.
Situated in upstate New York is a big concentration of manufacturing companies producing different products, comprising garments, furs, printed products, bus line vehicles and railroad equipment. Within Albany and the Hudson Valley, there is production of nanotechnology and microchip manufacturing. The state of New York is a key agricultural producer generating more than $3 billion in agricultural products from farmland which covers roughly one quarter of its total land area. Major products consist of cattle and other livestock, dairy, nursery stock, vegetables, maple syrup and apples. No other state produces as much cabbage as New York state.
New York's economy is bigger compared to most independent countries, ranking 16th behind Turkey as the largest economy within the world. $46,364 is the average per capita income.
During 2007, the state's exports totaled more than $71.1 billion. The main exports were computers and electronics, foodstuffs, minerals, commodities, cut diamonds and auto parts. Other than Canada, its biggest markets for exports are the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Hong Kong and Israel.
