The city of Rochester, New York serves as the county seat for the County of Monroe. It is the third most populous city within the state after the city of New York and Buffalo. Rochester is situated just south of Lake Ontario.

Rochester's Larger Metropolitan Area consists of all of Monroe County and parts of Livingston County, Ontario County, Orleans County and Wayne County. Based on the 2010 Census, the metro area has a population of 1,054,322 inhabitants.

The city of Rochester has several arts and cultural institutions. The city of Rochester places a high priority on the arts. The Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester offers numerous opportunities. Cultural institutions comprise the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Memorial Art Gallery, the Rochester Museum & Science Center, the Strong Museum, the Geva Theatre Center, the AV Room and the Strasenburg Planetarium. Once recognized as The World's Image Centre, due to its role in the history of photography, Rochester is home to the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film. The city's yearly calendar consists of the Rochester Jazz Festival, the Corn Hill Festival and and the Park Avenue Merchants Festival. Film festivals are held on an annual basis, most notably the High Falls Film Festival.

Rochester's colourful vernacular has extended beyond the border of the city. The city people popularized the word "pop" that means soda drinks. Hot dogs are called "red hots".

Rochester was once recognized as The Flour City, and more recently as The Flower City. The city of Rochester hosts a Lilac Festival each May, which attracts 100,000 visitors from around the world. People who love outdoor activities can hike around remarkable waterfalls and canyons at Letchworth State Park, south of the city. Lots of locals have cottages within the nearby Finger Lakes Region.

Rochester is home to Fortune 1000 company Eastman Kodak, once the largest employer within the region. A number of regional and national businesses are located here, like for example Bausch and Lomb. The city of Rochester was the birthplace of Xerox during the year 1906, then known as The Haloid Company. Xerox still exists within Rochester. Western Union was founded within the Rochester area, but has moved since.

Because of the city's large concentration of optical science research and companies, the city of Rochester is known as the imaging capital of the world. The Institute of Optics is situated on the campus of the University of Rochester. Rochester Institute of Technology in nearby Henrietta also has an imaging program. The University of Rochester is presently the largest employer in the Rochester area.
